Pico do Arieiro has partially reopened since the August 2024 wildfires, which means you can visit the main viewpoint at Pico do Arieiro and you have the option to walk 800 meters down until the viewpoint ‘Ninho da Manta’. or 1.2 km down to ‘Miradouro da Pedra Rija’ (Stairway to Heaven).

From here there is a fence which you are not allowed to cross. The PR1 hike remains CLOSED. Please note that trespassing closed trails may result in a €5000,- fine and is dangerous for yourself and for the rescue workers in case of an emergency.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Most times google maps will sent you the fastest route, however this often means that it will sent you to the road which is still closed.

From Funchal drive up to Monte and then towards Poiso. Continue the ER103 until you reach the restaurant ‘Abrigo do Poiso’. Just after the restaurant there is a crossing where you turn left towards Pico do Arieiro.

Please be aware that the situation may change by the time you get to Madeira, therefor it is always advised to keep an eye on the updated list at IFCN Madeira.
