Kairouan is one of the most important historical cities in Tunisia. Founded in 670 AD during the Islamic conquest, it’s considered the religious capital of the country and is home to the Great Mosque, one of the most significant in the Islamic world. The Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wandering through it feels like stepping into a living museum.

It’s much more relaxed than the Medina in Tunis, with quiet alleyways, beautiful tilework, and bursts of Islamic art and mosaics around every turn. We absolutely loved the murals and artwork in the narrow alleys weaving through the maze-like Medina. Don’t be surprised if a few friendly locals stop to say hello and point you towards another famous attraction!
