If you’re looking for a proper cave stay in Matmata (if you are unable to book Sidi Idriss like us), this is the best pick. Marhala Hotel is a traditional troglodyte hotel built into the earth, with simple rooms surrounding quiet courtyards and cool tunnels that keep things nice and chilled, even in the middle of summer.

It’s definitely no-frills, but the rooms are clean, the staff are kind, and the food is good and hearty (dinner and breakfast are included). It’s a peaceful place to unplug, get a taste of local architecture, and experience the desert in a totally different way. Plus, it's just down the road from the famous Star Wars hotel, so you can pop over there for a visit and snap some pics like we did!
