The Black Fort of Galle, also known as Santa Cruz or Zwart Fort, has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it was built by the Portuguese. Over the years, it expanded and became a key defense post for the Dutch. Some say it got its name from the thick smoke from cannons, while others believe it was because of the African slaves held there. Despite facing damage from high seas, restoration work has preserved this historic site, now open to the public.
