Imbabura Volcano is an inactive stratovolcano located in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador. With a peak of 4,609 meters, it stands as a prominent landmark in the region and has been worshiped by local people throughout history. The volcano last erupted about 7,500 years ago, however it is still closely monitored by volcanologists due to its potential to cause destruction to nearby cities. It is home to many interesting geological phenomena, such as Achilly Pachacamac, which is said to be a boulder from the last eruption thrown across the valley by Imbabura himself. Local legend tells that Imbabura fought with another mountain, Mojanda, to win the love of Cotacachi, who became his wife. When Cotacachi becomes snowcapped in the morning, Imbabura is said to have been with her during the night. Its snow-covered peaks, fertile slopes and its spiritual meanings make Imbabura Volcano a beautiful and impressive site to visit.
