Chinchero is a highland town in the Sacred Valley that offers both a cultural and historical experience. It’s best known for its traditional weaving cooperatives, where women in colorful Andean dress demonstrate how alpaca and sheep wool is washed, spun, dyed with natural plants, and woven into intricate textiles. Watching the process felt like stepping into living history, and we gained a much deeper appreciation for the beautiful scarves, blankets, and clothing sold here.

We also visited the archaeological site, which includes Inca terraces, walls, and the remains of a palace built by Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The Spanish later built a colonial church on top, decorated with striking murals, which makes the site a powerful example of Cusco’s layered history.

Chinchero was a highlight because it combined hands-on culture with ruins and sweeping views of the valley. It was more than just sightseeing. It felt like an exchange of traditions and stories.

We visited on a private Sacred Valley tour arranged by Mountain View Experience.

Pro Tip: If you’re interested in buying textiles, this is one of the best places to purchase authentic, handmade pieces directly from the artisans. Bring cash, and don’t rush. The demonstrations are as rewarding as the shopping.
