Sillustani is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites near Puno, set on a scenic peninsula of Lake Umayo. The site is famous for its chullpas, massive cylindrical stone funerary towers built by pre-Inca cultures and later used by the Incas. Many are still standing, with intricate stonework that has endured for centuries.

We really enjoyed the walk around Sillustani, which was both peaceful and educational. Learning about the burial traditions and seeing the towers up close made history come alive, and the lake views added to the sense of serenity. It’s not as famous as Machu Picchu, but it offers a window into another chapter of Peru’s ancient past.

Pro Tip: Visit in the late afternoon, the light over Lake Umayo makes the towers glow, and it’s much quieter than midday. Bring a jacket; the wind can be chilly at this altitude.
