The Sacred Valley is one of Peru’s most breathtaking regions, stretching from Cusco to Machu Picchu along the Urubamba River. Once the heart of Inca agriculture and spirituality, it’s now a mix of archaeological sites, traditional villages, and stunning mountain scenery.
For us, the Sacred Valley felt like the perfect balance of culture and nature. One day you’re exploring ancient terraces at Moray or salt pans at Maras, the next you’re wandering through colorful markets in Chinchero or soaking up the history in Ollantaytambo. It’s also a gentler altitude than Cusco, making it a great place to acclimatize.
Many travelers rush through the Sacred Valley on their way to Machu Picchu, but we recommend slowing down and spending a few nights here. Staying in the valley gave us time to connect with the landscapes and people, and it was one of the most rewarding parts of our Peru trip.
Pro Tip: Buy the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico) for entry into sites like Chinchero, Moray, and Pisac. Some places (like Maras) have separate entry fees, so bring cash.
