Moray is one of the most striking Inca sites in the Sacred Valley, made up of circular terraces that descend like giant bowls into the earth. Archaeologists believe it was used as an agricultural laboratory, since each level creates its own microclimate, allowing the Incas to experiment with growing different crops.

Standing at the edge of the terraces is breathtaking, but our favorite part was walking past the first set of terraces (where most tours stop) and discovering that there are several more beyond! With fewer people around, we had the chance to take in the scale and mystery of Moray in peace.

It was one of the most unique and fascinating sites in Peru. The design is both beautiful and practical, and it showcases just how advanced Inca knowledge of agriculture and engineering truly was.

Most Sacred Valley tours combine Moray with places like Chinchero, Maras Salt Mines and Ollantaytambo, making for one epic day.

Pro Tip: Go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer crowds. And don’t just stop at the first terraces!
