Mundo Alpaca is part mini-zoo, part cultural center, and part boutique. And it's all dedicated to Peru’s iconic alpacas and their role in Andean culture. Visitors can meet alpacas and llamas up close, feed them, and learn to tell the difference between these species. Inside, artisans demonstrate traditional weaving techniques and explain the importance of alpaca and vicuña fibers, some of the most luxurious textiles in the world.
Mundo Alpaca was both fun and educational for us. We loved seeing the animals in the courtyard (a perfect photo op!) and then watching skilled weavers at work. It gave us a new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the ponchos, scarves, and sweaters you see throughout Peru. We even grabbed a coffee at their café and enjoyed it while watching the alpacas, a surprisingly relaxing little break in the middle of sightseeing.
Pro Tip: Entry is free, so even if you’re not planning to shop, it’s worth visiting. If you do want to buy alpaca textiles, this is one of the best places in Peru to ensure you’re getting the real thing.
