Known as the “White City” for its colonial buildings made of white volcanic stone (sillar), Arequipa is one of Peru’s most beautiful and vibrant cities (and quite possibly our very favorite). With snowcapped volcanoes as its backdrop, the city blends history, architecture, food, and a relaxed vibe that makes it a favorite for travelers.

The Plaza de Armas is one of the prettiest in South America, framed by the Basilica Cathedral and arcaded balconies. The Santa Catalina Monastery feels like a city within a city, with colorful courtyards and centuries of history. Foodies will love exploring the local markets and sampling Arequipa’s famous dishes like rocoto relleno and chupe de camarones. And for those craving adventure, Arequipa is the gateway to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, and home to soaring Andean condors.

It has all the culture and beauty of Cusco, but with a calmer, less touristy atmosphere. Sitting at a café overlooking the plaza, with Misti volcano glowing in the background, felt like pure magic.

Pro Tip: Stay at least 2–3 days to explore the city and adjust to the altitude before heading into Colca Canyon.
