Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo) is the small town at the base of Machu Picchu, where almost every traveler spends at least one night. Set along a river and surrounded by steep green cliffs, it’s a mix of restaurants, markets, hot springs, and hotels.
After hiking to Machu Picchu, we loved wandering the narrow streets of Aguas Calientes, grabbing a meal, and even treating ourselves to a quick massage while waiting for our train back. The hot springs here are also a popular way to soak sore muscles (though not the most luxurious, they’re perfect after trekking).
The town itself is lively. Some travelers love the energy, while others find it touristy. But it’s undeniably part of the Machu Picchu journey, and with the right mindset, it can be a fun stop.
Pro Tip: Bring cash for food and souvenirs. If you’re staying overnight, book your train and Machu Picchu tickets in advance. For quieter moments, walk along the river at the edge of town, away from the crowds.
