The Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve is an astonishing high-Andean landscape northeast of Arequipa, featuring salt flats, saline lagoons, meadows (bofedales), and towering volcanoes. It’s a sanctuary for native wildlife, including llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas roam freely, while flamingos grace the shallow waters of Salinas Lagoon.

We did this as a day trip from Arequipa and were blown away by the surreal beauty: snow-capped volcanoes on the horizon, salt-encrusted plains shimmering under the sun, and graceful flamingos feeding at the shoreline. It’s one of those experiences that balances serenity with raw natural spectacle.

Pro Tip: Early departure works best for clear skies and peaceful wildlife viewing. Layers are essential, since mornings at over 14,000 feet (4,300 meters) can be cold, while midday sun hits hard. Don’t forget a warm jacket, snacks, and your camera!
