On the long drive between Arequipa and Puno or Cusco, the Mirador Alto Lagunillas makes for a breathtaking roadside stop. At nearly 14,700 ft (4,500 meters), this lookout offers sweeping views of the Altiplano (shimmering lagoons surrounded by snow-capped peaks).

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot Andean flamingos feeding in the water, along with vicuñas grazing on the sparse grass. It’s a perfect place to stretch your legs, snap a photo, and catch your breath (literally, because the altitude is no joke here!).

Pro Tip: Dress warm, it’s windy and cold year-round. Vendors often sell hot drinks and snacks nearby, which make the stop even more enjoyable.
