The Convent of San Francisco is one of Lima’s most atmospheric historic sites, blending colonial architecture with centuries of stories. Inside, you’ll find an ornate library straight out of a movie set, filled with antique books and carved woodwork. The highlight for most visitors, though, is the catacombs beneath the church, where thousands of bones are arranged in hauntingly geometric patterns.
We visited as part of an evening tour of Lima’s Centro Histórico, and it was both eerie and fascinating. Walking the narrow tunnels of the catacombs gave us a visceral connection to the city’s colonial past, while the quiet courtyards and library above provided balance. It’s the kind of site that stays with you long after you leave.
Pro Tip: Tours are required and usually guided in Spanish, though English options are also available (for English-speakers, feel free to use our link). Combine your visit with a Centro Histórico walking tour for context.
