The Plaza de Armas, also called Plaza Mayor, is the historic heart of Lima. Surrounded by colonial-era architecture, it’s home to some of the city’s most important buildings: the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, and the Municipal Palace. The wide square, palm trees, and fountains make it one of the most atmospheric places in the city.

We visited the Plaza de Armas as part of an evening tour, which gave it extra magic. The golden lights illuminated the ornate facades, and the energy of the Centro Histórico came alive. It’s the perfect place to get a sense of Lima’s history and to feel connected to the centuries that shaped the city.

Pro Tip: Come during the day to see the Changing of the Guard at the Government Palace (usually around noon), and return at night for a completely different atmosphere.
