Few places in the world live up to their reputation, but Machu Picchu absolutely does. Hidden in the cloud forest at nearly 8,000 ft (2,440 m), this Inca citadel is one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites on earth. From the iconic viewpoint looking down at the terraces and Huayna Picchu mountain to the fine stonework scattered across the site, it’s easy to see why it’s a New Wonder of the World.
Visiting Machu Picchu felt surreal, the culmination of months of anticipation and travel through Peru. It was everything we had hoped for and more.
👉 Important Tips:
Book tickets early. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, and they sell out fast.
Bring your passport. You’ll need it to enter.
Choose your circuit. There are three:
Circuit 1 → classic postcard views.
Circuit 2 → the most complete route.
Circuit 3 → shorter, closer to the lower areas.
Don’t stamp your passport here! It can invalidate it.
Logistics: Most people reach Machu Picchu by taking a train to Aguas Calientes, then a bus up the mountain. Check our "Travel Tips" section for further details.
Pro Tip: Go early in the morning if you can, when the mist slowly lifting over the mountains makes for a magical arrival.
