Puno is a high-altitude city on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake. While the city itself is modest, it serves as the gateway to one of Peru’s most unique cultural experiences: visiting the islands of Lake Titicaca.
From Puno, you can take boat tours to the famous Uros Floating Islands, built entirely from totora reeds, or head further out to Taquile Island, known for its traditional weaving culture and stunning views. The city also has a lively main square (Plaza Mayor) and a vibrant folk dance and music scene.
When we were in the region, Puno was less about the city and more about what it connected us to: the lake, the people, and the traditions that make this region feel timeless. That said, we enjoyed wandering the plaza, trying local dishes, and soaking in the atmosphere of this lakeside town.
Pro Tip: Puno sits at 12,500 ft (3,800 meters), so altitude adjustment is key. Take it slow your first day and stay hydrated.
