Ollantaytambo is one of our favorite places in the Sacred Valley! It's a living Inca town with cobblestone streets, flowing canals, and an atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It’s also home to one of the most impressive Inca sites outside of Machu Picchu: a massive fortress with steep terraces climbing the mountainside.

We visited Ollantaytambo several times, and each time it revealed something new. The archaeological site blew us away with its scale and the precision of its stonework. From the top, the views over the valley and town are incredible. Beyond the ruins, we loved simply wandering the charming streets of the town itself. It’s one of the few places where Inca urban planning is still very much alive.

Ollantaytambo is also the gateway to Machu Picchu. Most trains to Aguas Calientes depart from here, and it’s where many treks (including our own Inca Trail adventure) begin. That combination of history, culture, and practical importance makes it a can’t-miss stop in the valley.

Pro Tip: Stay overnight if you can. Once the day-trippers leave, the town feels peaceful and authentic, and you can enjoy both the ruins and the narrow streets without the crowds.
