The Mercado San Camilo is Arequipa’s central market, a vibrant mix of colors, smells, and sounds. Designed in part by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel Tower guy), the market has been the heart of local life for over a century. Inside, you’ll find everything from mountains of fresh produce to stalls selling cheeses, breads, meats, flowers, textiles, and souvenirs.
We found that wandering San Camilo was one of the best ways to experience daily life in Arequipa. You can sample local treats, from fresh juices and smoothies to queso helado (Arequipa’s signature “cheese ice cream” that doesn’t actually have cheese in it). It’s also the perfect place to try traditional dishes at local prices, far cheaper than restaurants.
Beyond food, the market is a cultural experience, with friendly vendors, rows of herbal remedies, and a glimpse into how locals shop and eat. It’s lively, chaotic, and authentic.
Pro Tip: Head to the juice stalls in the morning for a fresh fruit blend, or try queso helado in the afternoon. Bring small bills and coins, as most vendors don’t take cards.
