The Plaza de Armas is the heart of Arequipa and one of the most beautiful squares in South America. Surrounded by elegant white stone arcades, with the snowcapped Misti volcano as a backdrop, it’s the perfect place to soak in the charm of the “White City.” At the center, a fountain anchors the square, while the grand Basilica Cathedral dominates one side with its twin towers.
We loved seeing the plaza at different times of day. In the morning, it was lively with locals, street vendors, and sunshine lighting up the arches. At night, the whole square glowed as the Basilica and surrounding buildings were illuminated, creating a romantic, almost magical atmosphere.
Don’t miss going inside the Basilica Cathedral! The guided tour takes you through the interior and up to the rooftop, where you’ll get sweeping views over the plaza and the city.
Pro Tip: Grab a seat on one of the balcony cafés or restaurants overlooking the square for the best perspective. It’s the perfect spot to relax and take in the beauty of Arequipa.
