Saqsaywaman is one of the most impressive Inca sites in Peru, just a short walk uphill from Cusco’s city center. Famous for its massive stone walls, some blocks weighing over 100 tons, the fortress shows the engineering genius of the Incas. The zigzag layout of the walls is said to represent the teeth of a puma (Cusco itself was shaped like this sacred animal).
We went back to Saqsaywaman several times during our stay in Cusco because it was that fascinating. Wandering among the colossal stones, we even found tunnels and hidden passageways, which felt like stepping back into another world. One of the best tips we can give is to go right when it opens. You’ll likely have the site almost to yourself for at least the first hour, making it feel even more magical.
From the upper terraces, the panoramic views over Cusco are stunning, especially at sunset when the city glows golden below. The site is also home to the annual Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) each June, one of Peru’s most important cultural celebrations.
Pro Tip: Buy the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Boleto Turístico) when you go, and remember to bring cash. If you want to walk up from Plaza de Armas, it is steep but rewarding. Or you can take an Uber or taxi if you’d rather save your energy for exploring the site itself.
