For adventurous travelers, the best way to experience the Colca Canyon is to hike it. Multi-day treks (2, 3, or 4 days) take you down into the canyon, through small Andean villages, and back up the steep canyon walls. It’s physically demanding, but the views, encounters, and sense of accomplishment make it one of Peru’s most rewarding hikes.
We chose the 3-day trek, and absolutely loved it (you can watch our full video on YouTube). The slower pace gave us time to enjoy the scenery, meet locals, and recover between climbs. Descending into the canyon felt surreal, with towering walls around us and the river rushing below. Nights were spent in rustic lodges and villages, giving us a glimpse into daily life here. The climb out was challenging, but reaching the rim after days in the canyon was unforgettable.
Other options include:
2-day trek: Faster and more intense, better for those short on time.
4-day trek: Go deeper into the canyon where it is more remote.
Pro Tip: Acclimatize in Arequipa first. The canyon rim is over 10,000 feet (3,200 meters) above sea level. Bring cash for meals, snacks, and tips in the villages. A walking stick (or renting poles) makes the steep climbs much easier.
