Culebrillas Canyon is a narrow, winding gorge carved from volcanic rock just outside Arequipa. The walls rise high above, twisting and curving in ways that feel almost otherworldly. Hidden along the canyon are ancient petroglyphs, etched by pre-Inca cultures, adding a layer of mystery and history to the hike.
We visited as part of our Ruta del Sillar tour, and it was the perfect complement to exploring the white stone quarries. Walking through Culebrillas felt like stepping into a natural cathedral, with its glowing rock walls, the winding paths, and the surprising discovery of petroglyphs made it both adventurous and deeply cultural.
Because it doesn’t see heavy traffic, it felt raw and authentic, an off-the-beaten-path adventure that showed us another side of Arequipa’s volcanic landscape.
Pro Tip: A guide is essential here, not only for spotting the petroglyphs but also for explaining their significance. Wear sturdy shoes, as the trail is rocky and uneven.
