The Paracas National Reserve is one of Peru’s most unique landscapes, a stark desert that meets the deep blue Pacific in dramatic cliffs and hidden beaches. Within its boundaries you’ll find Playa Roja (the famous red sand beach), Playa Lagunillas (a good spot for fresh seafood), and endless desert vistas where the wind and waves shape the coastline.

Exploring the reserve was one of the highlights for us when visiting Paracas. Driving from one viewpoint to another, it felt like stepping into a painting: golden desert, turquoise ocean, and striking contrasts everywhere you looked. It’s a place where you can take in the silence of the desert one moment, and watch pelicans dive into the waves the next.

Pro Tip: Rent a bike, ATV, or take a guided tour to see the reserve’s highlights in a few hours. If you’re self-driving, don’t forget water, sunscreen, and a hat (there’s no shade out here).
