The Ruta del Sillar takes you to the volcanic stone quarries on the outskirts of Arequipa, where the iconic white sillar that built much of the city was carved. These towering stone walls, including one façade called “White Petra” for ist resemblance to Jordan’s famous site, feel like walking through a canyon carved by both nature and human hands. Along the way, you’ll see incredible stone carvings that blend traditional motifs with modern artistry.

We did the guided tour in the afternoon, and it was the perfect choice. As the sun dipped lower, the quarry walls glowed golden and white, and the lighting made everything even more beautiful. It was a peaceful, almost magical way to experience the site, and far less crowded, with the bonus of watching sunset over the volcanic landscape.

Ruta del Sillar is more than just a quarry visit. It connects the beauty of Arequipa’s “White City” architecture back to its origins, while giving stunning views of Misti volcano and the surrounding desert.

Pro Tip: Go in the afternoon for the best lighting and cooler temperatures. If you want the full story behind the carvings and quarrying process, a guided tour is worth it.
