Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain, is Peru’s Instagram-famous trek, a mountain ridge streaked with red, yellow, and turquoise stripes created by mineral deposits. At nearly 17,000 ft (5,200 m), it’s a tough hike, but the payoff is standing in front of one of the country’s most surreal landscapes.

The altitude is what makes this experience tough. Many people struggle with the climb, and horses are available for part of the way. But reaching the top, with the colorful mountain in front of you and the snowcapped Andes beyond, is unforgettable.
