The PeruRail Expedition Train is the most budget-friendly way to travel from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. It’s a slightly bumpy, but comfortable ride (about 1.5 hours) with standard seating, large windows, and onboard snacks available for purchase.

It may not have the glass-domed ceilings of the Vistadome, but the journey is still incredibly scenic as you follow the Urubamba River into the cloud forest. For us, it felt like a no-fuss, straightforward way to reach Machu Picchu without overspending.

Pro Tip: Book seats on the left side when heading toward Aguas Calientes for the best views of the river. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking Dramamine or taking other precautions.
