Puka Pukara (meaning “Red Fortress”) is a small Inca military site, named for the reddish hue of its stone at sunset. It’s thought to have served as a guard post and resting place for travelers heading to and from Cusco.

We enjoyed wandering the ruins and soaking in the expansive views of the valley. It may not be the grandest site, but its location makes it a beautiful stop. Together with nearby Tambomachay, it paints a fuller picture of Inca life beyond Cusco.

Pro Tip: Visit in the late afternoon if you can. The stones really do glow red in the setting sun.
