Saxhóll is one of the most popular craters on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, found on the peninsula's western-most tip. It offers a great excuse to stretch your legs as you drive around the peninsula and an excellent sightseeing opportunity for those who do not want to hike too far. The crater is approximately 50 m (160 ft) high with a useful walking path and steps in order to make the ascent as easy as possible. From the top of the crater, you get a great view all the way over the Atlantic Ocean and the expansive, dried lava fields of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It's estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 years ago, a volcanic explosion caused the formation of Saxhóll, making it a great examples of seeing a crater in Iceland that once shot hot magma from the earth, sculpting the landscape around it.

QUICK NOTES:

  • Nice to know: There's a nice and easy trail leading to the top.
