Grænadyngja ("Green Shield Volcano") is one of my favourite hiking areas on the Reykjanes peninsula and offers great views over Sogin, the geothermal valley next to it. The trail isn't marked so it can be hard to explain the way to the top but I would park the car here and then start hiking south. • What it is: A mountain in Reykjanes with great views over a geothermal area.

• Best season: Summer.

• Best time of day: Any but sunset up there is beautiful.
