This is a cool 4000-year-old lava field on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Legend has it that two Swedish berserkers cleared a path through the field for love, only to meet a tragic end. The lava field was formed by four scoria craters erupting around 4000 years ago, creating a unique landscape of red and grey craters. You can explore this ancient site and its saga-filled history by driving a scenic gravel road with black rocks covered by thick green moss and scoria cones in the background.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A lava field on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, West Iceland.

  • Best season: Summer (any will work but road might be more difficult outside summer).

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: The road might be bumpy but is usually doable on a regular car. Definitely a worthy detour!
