This is a charming seaside town located on the northern shore of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It has a long and vibrant history, having been settled in 1550 and heavily influenced by the Danish during their rule of Iceland. You can visit the Norwegian House museum, which offers insight into the life of wealthy Icelanders during the 19th century; enjoy boat tours of the Breiðafjörður Bay; do some hiking; kayaking tours and visit the little island just off the harbour.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: One of my favourite towns in Iceland, located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

  • Best season: Any (but definitely the most lively during summer).

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: You can take the ferry from here over to the Westfjords (including your car).
