Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland, located in southwestern Iceland on the southern shore of Faxaflói Bay. It is said to have been settled by Ingólfr Arnarson during the 8th century CE, and according to legend was established by tossing his high seat pillars into the ocean with the promise to settle wherever they were brought ashore by the gods. Nowadays, Reykjavík stands as a bustling city full of culture, activity, and entertainment. Visitors can enjoy the unparalleled natural beauty of the area as well as plenty of exciting nightlife, live music, and traditional restaurants. There's something for everyone in Reykjavík!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The oldest part of Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland.

  • Best season: Any but it's the most lively during summer and around Christmas.

  • Best time of day: Noon and evenings for the most life.

  • Nice to know: If you really want to experience "the old Reykjavík", get off the crowded streets and simply wander onto the old streets in the residential area (for example, around Tjörnin, Fischersund and Óðinsgata).
