Silfra is a remarkable underwater fissure located in Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart. The crack is filled with exceptionally clear glacial water that has filtered through underground lava for decades before reaching the fissure. This process creates visibility of over 100 meters, making Silfra one of the clearest freshwater diving sites in the world. Today, you can experience the fissure through guided snorkeling and diving tours that allow you to float between two continents.

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A crystal-clear fissure filled with glacial water where visitors can snorkel or dive between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

  • Best season: Accessible year-round.

  • Best time of day: Morning often offers the calmest conditions and fewer visitors.

  • Nice to know: The water in Silfra stays around 2–4°C year-round but never freezes because it is constantly flowing from the nearby glacier-fed groundwater system.
