Borgarfjörður Eystri is one of my favourite places in Iceland. Located in the north-east part of the country and boasting some of Iceland's most stunning scenery, I can't recommend it enough. There's a great hotel, spa and restaurant called Blábjörg Hotel which also has a brewery. There's also the largest puffin colony in Iceland where you can get incredible close to the puffins and even watch them from special cabins by the colony. Borgarfjörður Eystri is also sometimes called the hiking mecca of Iceland which is no coincidence — there are countless options for incredible hikes, whether you're looking for day trips or even multi-day tours.
QUICK NOTES:
What it is: A super pretty fjord in the Eastfjords with a small seaside village, countless hiking options and home to one of Iceland's best puffin colonies.
Best season: It's pretty all year round but to see the puffins you'll want to aim for summer (typically late April to early August, with peak viewing in June and July). Also, there are days in the winter time where the roads might be closed due to weather.
Best time of day: Any.
Nice to know: Can be harder to reach during winter and puffins only stay during the summer. Check out Blábjörg for an incredible spa experience and food. Bring your hiking boots and poles if you're into hiking!
