Welcome to one of the most surreal landscapes in the Highlands! Kerlingarfjöll is a place where fire and ice truly collide, creating a breathtaking scene of colorful rhyolite mountains streaked with snow and steaming geothermal vents. To get to the main hiking area, Hveradalir, you'll need a capable 4x4, as the F-roads are an adventure in themselves. Once you arrive at the upper car park, you're immediately greeted by this otherworldly valley. The most popular trail is a loop through Hveradalir itself, which can take a couple of hours and involves a fair bit of stair climbing on its well-maintained paths, but every step rewards you with incredible views of bubbling mud pots and hissing fumaroles set against a backdrop of impossible colors.
