First Time in the Alps? Start Here
Choose the right hike, not the prettiest photo.

The classic beginner mistake is picking a hike because it looks good online. What actually matters is distance and elevation. For your first hike, aim for under 10 to 12 km and around 500m of climbing. That's plenty to get the feeling.
Respect the time estimates and then add to them. A "3 to 4 hour hike" easily becomes a half day once you factor in breaks, photos and slower sections. One hike per day is more than enough at the start.
Terrain varies more than people expect. Some trails are wide and easy, others narrow, steep or exposed. If a route mentions "exposed sections" or "sure-footedness required" and you're unsure, skip it. A good first trip mixes one easy hike with spots reachable by cable car or close to parking, so you see incredible places without exhausting yourself. And don't measure your first experience against what you see online; many of those hikes aren't beginner-level, even when they look easy.
