The Alps, Germany

Hiking is the heart of it. The Alps are one of the best places in the world to walk, from easy strolls to demanding mountain trails, and every level is rewarded with incredible views and quiet valleys.

The food is a highlight in its own right. From traditional dishes to sweet treats like Apfelstrudel, there's a lot to try, and everything tastes better with a view from a mountain hut.

If you want more adventure, Via Ferratas let you climb safely along steep rock faces. Switzerland has many well-maintained routes, like the Via Ferrata Mürren-Gimmelwald. The mountain lakes are some of the most beautiful spots of all, and not all of them need a hike: Eibsee, Vilsalpsee and Plansee are easy to reach. The mountain towns are worth slowing down for too, places like Lauterbrunnen, Hallstatt and Oberstdorf.

For something special, spend a night on a mountain. Sleeping in a hut means sunset and sunrise surrounded by nature, far from the busy spots, and in some regions you're even allowed to pitch a tent. Biking is another great way to explore, on road or trail, and almost every hotel rents bikes or e-bikes. And in the colder months the Alps turn into a winter playground for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing.
