If it’s your first visit, this is where Ancient Rome really starts to make sense. Walk slowly and take in the scale rather than rushing through. It’s mostly outdoors with little shade, so early morning is best. Easy to combine with the Colosseum.

Opening time: Usually from 9:00am.

Time needed: 1–1.5 hours.

Best time of day: Morning before midday heat.

Tip: Bring water and a hat, there’s minimal shade.
