Scotland's Best Castles

With over 5000 castles (many now just ruins) - it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to visiting Scotland's best.

Kilchurn Castle

Nestled at the head of Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle stands as an epitome of charm amidst the epic munros. Once the seat of the Campbells of Glenorchy in the 1400s, this castle, though abandoned in the 1700s, continues to captivate visitors. Embrace multiple vantage points – from the main car park on the A85 to the lay-bys on the A819 – offering striking views of the ruins. Castle Sinclair Girnigoe

Perched on a cliff edge, Castle Sinclair, despite much of its structure lost to time, remains an evocative testament to the Sinclair family's power. Accessible from Noss Head car park, the castle's setting, surrounded by water, exudes a sense of historical grandeur. Explore the remnants of the central fortification via a permanent bridge and don't miss the small beach, once a vital arrival point for supplies.

Dunrobin Castle & Gardens

Further south along the coastline, Dunrobin Castle's majestic presence stands distinctively intact, its fairytale spires and turrets a sight to behold. While a ticket grants access to the castle, gardens, and museums, admiring the castle from the beach adjoining its grounds offers a glimpse of its grandeur at no cost. Witness the falconry displays held in the gardens for an added experience.

Eilean Donan Castle

With a cinematic allure that has graced numerous films, Eilean Donan Castle's position on an island where three lochs converge makes it a picturesque sight. While a fee is required for castle entry, the car park provides a perfect spot for capturing postcard-worthy images. For an alternative view, stop at the Dornie Community Hall on the opposite side of the water.

Dunnottar Castle

Nestled atop a 160-foot rock and surrounded by the North Sea, Dunnottar Castle's dramatic setting matches its turbulent history. A small fee grants access to the fortress, but the stunning views from the mainland can be enjoyed without cost.

Duntrune Castle

Occupied by the Malcolm family, this private residence offers tours upon inquiry or the opportunity to stay in one of its estate cottages to relish the beauty of its 500-acre surroundings.

Edinburgh Castle

As the iconic fortress crowning the heart of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle's admission fee is a worthy investment for the wealth of history and panoramic views it offers.
