You can reach Monte Palace Tropical Garden easily by the Funchal cable car or by taxi; there is a paid entry and it is best to buy tickets on arrival or in advance if you want to be sure of a slot. The garden is a shaded, hilly site of exotic plants, tiled galleries, sculptures and koi ponds, so wear sturdy shoes and expect uneven paths and many steps — parts are not well suited to limited mobility. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours to explore, bring a camera and water, and go in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and nicer light; there is a small café and restrooms on site.
