🗓️ Best time to visit:

  • Jun–Sep (safe access, guided tours available)

  • Morning or late afternoon for best light

⏱️ Recommended time:

  • 4–6 hours

One of the most accessible glaciers in Wrangell–St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the Root Glacier offers a rare chance to walk directly on ice surrounded by towering peaks. Just a short hike from Kennicott, this is a true Alaskan adventure you don’t want to miss.

💡 Why visit:

  • walk on a real glacier with visible crevasses and blue ice

  • one of the easiest glacier-access hikes in Alaska

  • unforgettable views of ice, mountains, and vast wilderness

⚠️ Good to know:

  • glacier travel can be dangerous → guided tour highly recommended

  • sturdy shoes or crampons needed for safe movement on ice

  • weather conditions can change quickly

🧊 Extra tip:
Don’t miss a guided hike on the Root Glacier—it’s one of the most accessible ways to walk on a glacier in Alaska. I would recommend to do a ICE CAVE tour, they have their own office wight in Kennecott and you can find more here
