What to Bring
your packing list
Lena and Chris
East Java, Indonesia
Java's highlights swing from freezing pre-dawn volcano rims to soaking waterfall canyons, often in the same day — so pack for both extremes.
Warm layers — proper jacket, hat and gloves for Bromo/Ijen sunrises (5–10°C)
Sturdy grippy shoes & water shoes — muddy, slick waterfall descents and cave trails
Dry bag + rain cover for camera gear — constant spray at Tumpak Sewu, Madakaripura, Kapas Biru
Quick-dry clothes + a spare set — you will get wet
Headlamp — pre-dawn hikes (Ijen, Jomblang) and dark trails
Refillable water bottle + electrolytes — hot, humid treks
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses — exposed temples and viewpoints
Mosquito repellent — dengue risk at dusk (Java is malaria-free in tourist areas)
Modest layer or sarong — temples and conservative villages
Power bank + offline maps — patchy signal in the mountains
