Lena and Chris

East Java, Indonesia

Java's highlights swing from freezing pre-dawn volcano rims to soaking waterfall canyons, often in the same day — so pack for both extremes.

  • Warm layers — proper jacket, hat and gloves for Bromo/Ijen sunrises (5–10°C)

  • Sturdy grippy shoes & water shoes — muddy, slick waterfall descents and cave trails

  • Dry bag + rain cover for camera gear — constant spray at Tumpak Sewu, Madakaripura, Kapas Biru

  • Quick-dry clothes + a spare set — you will get wet

  • Headlamp — pre-dawn hikes (Ijen, Jomblang) and dark trails

  • Refillable water bottle + electrolytes — hot, humid treks

  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses — exposed temples and viewpoints

  • Mosquito repellent — dengue risk at dusk (Java is malaria-free in tourist areas)

  • Modest layer or sarong — temples and conservative villages

  • Power bank + offline maps — patchy signal in the mountains
