Edinburgh, United Kingdom

January

Winter in Edinburgh is cold and quiet.
Expect mixed weather — often cold, but you can still get bright, crisp sunny days.

  • Very low crowds

  • Cheapest hotel and flight prices

  • A peaceful time to explore the city without tourists

February

Still deep winter, with chilly temperatures and more frequent rain.

  • Quiet streets and major attractions with no queues

  • Budget-friendly travel

  • Good museum and indoor sightseeing month

March

Early spring begins to show. It’s still cold, but signs of life return.

  • Early blossoms and snowdrops appear in parks

  • Still relatively quiet

  • Prices remain lower before peak season

April

Spring settles in properly. Weather improves but is still changeable.

  • Milder temperatures and increasing sunshine

  • Easter holidays can be busy and more expensive

  • Cherry blossoms begin appearing in late April around the city (especially in gardens and parks)

May (our favourite month in Edinburgh)

One of the best times to visit Edinburgh.

  • Longer daylight hours and generally pleasant weather

  • Mild temperatures with a good chance of sunny days

  • Flowers and greenery in full bloom

  • Fewer crowds than summer

June

Early summer with improving weather and rising visitor numbers.

  • Often warm, bright, and relatively dry

  • Great walking conditions

  • Prices still lower than peak summer

July

Peak summer season.

  • One of the warmest months, but still unpredictable (rain is possible)

  • Busy city with lots of tourists

  • Higher accommodation prices

August

The busiest month of the year due to major festivals:

  • Edinburgh Festival Fringe (world’s largest arts festival)

  • Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the castle

  • City becomes extremely crowded (population can nearly triple)

  • Very expensive accommodation

  • Lively, energetic atmosphere across the entire city

September

Early autumn and one of the most underrated months.

  • Often mild, dry, and sunny

  • Fewer crowds after festival season

  • Prices begin to drop

  • Early autumn colours start appearing in parks and hills

October

Full autumn atmosphere.

  • Beautiful autumn foliage across the city

  • Mixed weather (sun, wind, and rain all possible)

  • Quieter than summer but still some holiday periods

  • Great for photography and scenic walks

November

Late autumn turning into winter.

  • Cold, damp and unpredictable weather

  • Very quiet tourist-wise

  • Good for indoor attractions, museums and cosy cafés

December 🎄

Festive season in full swing.

  • Famous Edinburgh Christmas Market in Princes Street Gardens

  • Stunning Christmas lights across the city

  • Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve celebrations) — one of the world’s most iconic New Year events

  • Very busy and more expensive during the festive period
