Packing List
Here's exactly what you should pack for your Edinburgh trip

Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Edinburgh weather can change within minutes (sun → wind → rain → repeat), so the key is layers + waterproofs rather than heavy single outfits.
🧥 Clothing
✔️ Layers (essential all year round)
T-shirts or light tops
Long-sleeve tops
Thin jumpers or fleece layers
A warm sweater for colder months
👉 Layering is crucial because mornings can be cold, afternoons mild and evenings windy.
✔️ Waterproof jacket (non-negotiable)
Lightweight, packable rain jacket OR proper waterproof coat
Ideally with a hood
Edinburgh is known for sudden rain showers, even in summer.
✔️ Warm outerwear (depending on season)
Winter (Nov–Mar): thick coat or insulated jacket
Spring/Autumn: medium-weight jacket
Summer: light jacket or windbreaker (still needed!)
✔️ Trousers / bottoms
Jeans or comfortable trousers
Leggings for walking days
Optional: waterproof trousers if you plan longer hikes (Arthur’s Seat etc.)
✔️ Comfortable outfits for walking
Edinburgh is a walking city with hills, cobblestones and stairs, so comfort matters more than style.
👟 Shoes (very important)
Comfortable walking trainers (best all-round option)
Waterproof walking shoes if possible
Optional: hiking boots if you plan hills or longer walks
👉 Avoid heels or flimsy shoes — the Royal Mile and Old Town are steep and uneven.
🧣 Accessories
These make a big difference in comfort:
Scarf (especially autumn/winter)
Hat or beanie (wind can be strong even in summer)
Gloves (Nov–Mar essential)
Sunglasses (yes, even in Scotland!)
🎒 Day bag essentials
A small backpack or crossbody bag is ideal for exploring the city.
Pack:
Water bottle (tap water is safe and good quality)
Snacks for long walking days
Portable phone charger / power bank
Umbrella (compact, wind-resistant if possible)
Maps / offline Google Maps download
Sunglasses + sunscreen (yes, the sun is very strong especially in spring& summer!)
Camera for iconic shots of the city
🌦️ Weather-specific extras
☀️ Summer (June–August)
Light layers
Sunscreen (UV still matters)
Light jacket for evenings
🌧️ Autumn / Spring
Waterproof jacket
Layers you can easily add/remove
❄️ Winter (Nov–Feb)
Warm coat
Thermal layers (top + leggings if needed)
Gloves, hat, scarf
Moisturiser (cold wind can be harsh on skin)
🏞️ If you plan hiking (Arthur’s Seat / viewpoints)
Proper trainers or hiking shoes
Windproof jacket
Water + snacks
Phone fully charged
Extra warm layer (it gets windy at the top even on sunny days)
💡 Final tip
If you’re unsure what to bring, always pack like this:
“One warm layer more than you think you need + one waterproof layer always.”
Edinburgh rewards prepared travellers and the right packing makes exploring the city so much more enjoyable.
