The Meadows is a large public park located just south of Edinburgh’s city centre, close to the University of Edinburgh and the Old Town. Known for its long tree-lined paths, open grassy spaces and views across the city and of the castle, it’s one of the most popular green spaces in Edinburgh. The park was originally part of a historic loch that was drained in the 17th century and later transformed into recreational grounds.

Top Tip:

If you’re in Edinburgh at the end of April or beginning of May, The Meadows has loads of cherry trees, so when the blossoms are out this is an amazing photo opportunity.

Top 3 things to do in The Meadows:

Walk or picnic in the park – Enjoy wide open lawns, cherry blossom trees in spring, and plenty of space for relaxing or socialising.

Sport & recreation – Join locals playing football, tennis, or frisbee, or make use of the walking and running paths that loop through the park.

Explore nearby cafés & university area – Wander towards nearby Bruntsfield and Marchmont for cosy cafés, bakeries, and independent shops just steps away. Top tip: vegan Café Considerate Chocolat, they sell delicious donuts!

Dogs allowed:

Yes — The Meadows is very dog-friendly and one of the most popular dog-walking spots in Edinburgh. Dogs can usually be off-lead in open areas, but should be under control.

Entry Fees:

Free — The Meadows is a public park and open to everyone year-round with no entry fee.

More information:

The Meadows was originally part of the Burgh Loch, a body of water that was drained in the 1600s as Edinburgh expanded southwards. Over time, it became a public recreational space and has remained one of the city’s most important green areas. Today, it is especially famous for its tree-lined paths, seasonal cherry blossoms, and lively atmosphere during warmer months, making it a central gathering place for students, locals, and visitors alike.
