Bring Cash – Don’t Rely on Cards

Japan is more cash-based than many travelers expect. Many restaurants, smaller shops, and rural attractions do not accept credit cards.

ATMs at 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and post offices reliably accept international cards. Carry enough yen for at least a few days’ worth of expenses. It’s better to withdraw in smaller amounts throughout your trip than rely solely on credit cards.
