Reaching the Lofoten Islands isn’t always straightforward, but the journey is half the fun.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

There are a few main ways to get there, and which one you choose depends on your priorities: time, budget, or scenery.

Option 1: Fly into Bodø + Take the Ferry

  • Step 1: Fly to Bodø – Bodø is a major transport hub with connections from Oslo and other Norwegian cities.

  • Step 2: Ferry to Lofoten – From Bodø, you can take the ferry to Moskenes, which lands you directly in the western part of the islands. Ferries take about 3–4 hours, and schedules vary by season, so it’s important to book in advance.

  • Why choose this route? If you want to start your trip right in the heart of the islands without a long drive, the Bodø ferry is convenient. Plus, the boat ride itself offers gorgeous views of the Norwegian Sea.

Option 2: Fly into Evenes (Harstad/Narvik Airport) + Drive

This was the option we chose. Evenes is a small airport, but it’s a practical gateway if you want to explore by car.

  • Car Rental: We rented with Hertz, the largest agency at the airport. Availability is limited, so reserve in advance.

  • The Drive: From Evenes, it’s about a 4–5 hour drive to the Lofoten Islands. Don’t let that deter you—the drive is breathtaking, with dramatic mountains, fjords, and coastal views the entire way. It’s one of those road trips where the journey feels just as memorable as the destination.

  • Why choose this route? Flexibility. Having a car lets you reach the smaller fishing villages, hidden beaches, and remote trailheads that make Lofoten so special.

Option 3: Fly Directly into Lofoten

There are also smaller airports in Leknes and Svolvær, which you can reach via connections from Bodø or Tromsø. These are the most direct, but flights are limited and often more expensive.

  • Why choose this route? If you’re short on time and want to land right in the islands, this is the fastest option.

Our Recommendation: If you love a scenic drive and want full freedom once you’re there, fly into Evenes and rent a car. If you want to skip the long road trip and arrive in the islands by sea, Bodø + ferry is a great choice. Either way, getting to Lofoten is an adventure worth savoring.
