What's best?
While Google Maps is great for general navigation, Japan-specific apps provide extra detail.
Navitime for Japan Travel (https://japantravel.navitime.com/en/area/jp) is one of the best—it shows train routes, costs, and even which train car to board for the quickest exit. It’s especially useful for non-JR lines and regional buses that Google Maps sometimes overlooks.
For Shinkansen bookings, use the SmartEX app (https://smart-ex.jp/en/), which allows seat reservations in advance. Some regions also have their own local apps, like Kyoto’s Arukumachi app for buses and subways.
Downloading a combination of Google Maps + Navitime + SmartEX makes travel planning smoother and less stressful.
